Often times we get asked about basic IT security in a practice as practice managers are unsure how exactly to secure their IT and data assets. We understand the worry as at Dentally securing data is the most important thing we do. Most practices don't have the resources to have data protected by several layers of security, CCTV and regular patrols throughout Europe so what are their options?
Passwords
One of the most basic things you can do is to set a password policy in your practice. A typical policy will ensure that each staff member changes their password every 30 days to make sure that the passwords change often. As well as this, the password should be a unique set of letters, numbers and if possible, alternative characters to ensure complete safety.
Plan for failure
Your dental software is already based in the cloud which makes planning for failure very simple. If an natural disaster or some other unexpected event happens you can set up a temporary practice, reschedule appointments and contact you patients very easily. Simply open up Dentally on a spare computer and your practice can be up and running very quickly.
Privileges
Setting privileges in a practice is easy with Dentally but it's something to think about throughout whatever IT services your practices uses. Each staff member should be assigned the minimum amount of access to a system that they need to complete their responsibilities. This practice significantly reduces the chances of data escaping unnoticed from the surgery.
Antivirus
The first line of defence for your IT system, installing a good antivirus should be top priority for any practice. This isn't a complete solution but it does help significantly. Your data is already secure with Dentally but your computer can still be at risk.
